World Bank Water & Sanitation Division – Performance Management
AEM supported the Bank on two engagements: Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Strategic Planning and Water & Sanitation Utility Benchmarking Database. AEM professionals served as on-site consultants for the development of the M&E framework for World Bank projects and developed a strategic plan for country-level, household-level, and provider-level data needs. The M&E plan consisted of the development of 5 core indicators and approximately 20 enhanced indicators, all of which were aligned with other international standards (WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program) and the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals. AEM also managed the completion and rollout of the first international web-based performance measure database for Water & Sanitation utilities. The data gathering templates were developed in Excel and Access for distribution to developing countries. Output data files from each country, or group of countries, were posted on the internet clearinghouses hosted by The Bank. AEM developed guidance documentation, QC plan, and final specifications. Initial benchmarking network included users from Africa, the Baltics, the US, and Asia.
Bulk Sewer Capacity Prediction Model – South Africa/ Booz Allen Hamilton
AEM was tasked with integrating several Microsoft Access databases containing geographical information about sewer networks with maps developed in AutoCAD Rel 13. The completed project provided functions that allow system users to determine sewage flow through bulk sewer lines from different developments. The storm water management model (SWMM) is used to model the flow in the sewer network. Both volume and quality are accounted for. The results from the analysis are displayed on the internet to allow maximum availability of the information. The impact of future developments can also be studied in this model.
Utility Management Services – Washington Gas
Through the years, AEM Corporation supported and continues to support Washington Gas Light Co. and its unregulated subsidiary, Washington Gas Energy Systems. Several of the business areas where AEM Corporation supports these efforts with Washington Gas includes:
- Customer support in electric demand side management opportunities and, more recently, the market forces presented by the deregulation of the public utility companies.
- Engineered systems evaluation, design, and redesign to support improved energy and related operating costs that structure investments with lower life cycle costs.
- Initiatives which assist public agencies in privatizing their energy infrastructure.
- Rate and metering programs to assist clients in determining how to best leverage their energy budgets.
- Asset management with the regulated plant and natural gas distribution infrastructure.
