Dr. Stephan J. Lemmer is an AI Engineer and co-founder of AEM's AI practice, where he supports a variety of data science, data quality, and other artificial intelligence projects. He is responsible for implementation and administration of AEM's AI governance strategy, ensuring that proposed and deployed algorithms are properly validated, unbiased, and scoped to prevent misuse.
Stephan received his Ph.D. in Robotics from the University of Michigan with the dissertation Hazy Oracles in Deep Learning, which demonstrated that when a model collaborates with a human, it must account for the fact that the human may provide incorrect, ambiguous, or misaligned information. The insights provided by this research informs Stephan's philosophy on appropriate and responsible uses of AI algorithms: because both man and machine will always have faults, responsible deployment is not about building a perfect algorithm or mandating human oversight, but instead about leveraging relative strengths and mitigating the effects of likely failures.
Stephan frequently speaks on the topic of AI at industry events. He has also given oral and poster presentations at the International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI), AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, and Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI).
